Spencer isn’t exactly A, but we did learn via Ezra’s massive pile of notes that Spencer wasn’t exactly innocent during the night of Alison’s disappearance. In a moment of pure, Adderall induced mania, Spencer had a flashback to the night of Alison’s disappearance, when she nearly hit the poor girl with a shovel.
Mrs. DiLaurentis paid CeCe not to tell anyone that she saw Spencer fighting with her daughter, and that she’s likely been covering it up with Mr. Hastings this whole time.
Speaking of curious people, Spencer only managed to find these notes of Ezra are when Aria broke into his apartment and trashed the place. He thinks that one of us did it, Aria said in tears at the beginning of the episode, as the rest of the Liars sympathetically listened to her cries of student teacher heartbreak. Could that someone have been Spencer?!
Clearly we won’t know who killed Alison or who is A, for that matter for quite some time, but we definitely learned that the best source for all things A-Team is still Ezra. Aria found an insane amount of notes when she ransacked his apartment, where she also found the Grunwald tape that clearly stated that Alison was still alive.
Luckily, Ezra was not home when this burglary was happening, because he was too busy meeting with Random House just, you know, one of the biggest book publishers in the universe to finalize plans for his book deal.
By the end of the episode, Aria had run away which sucks, because Spencer currently needs her more than ever. No one not Toby, nor either of Spencer’s parents, who managed to appear in the same room at the same time which literally never happens on this show is being particularly helpful as she deals with her crippling paranoia and drug withdrawal, and Toby wouldn’t even accept her cronut. Lame. I can’t even blame her for going back to those pills A gave her, because I’d be bugging out too if my boyfriend spurned my cronut advances.
Meanwhile, both Hanna and Emily managed to remain semi-normal in the face of Ezra-gate, which was a relief. Hanna spent the episode running back and forth between sexy Detective Holbrook and sexy Travis what’s-his face, which was fine by me due to the eye candy, but also a tad bit boring. Though I’m actually glad that Holbrook denied her kiss, as it’s good to know that at least one adult man in Rosewood isn’t into dating high school girls. Emily’s romantic issues were a bit more… complicated. She’s still in the difficult situation of being the only one in semi-direct communication with Alison via Shana and she has to hide this all from Paige, AKA the most normal significant other on the show. Paige became fed up with Emily’s secrecy and lack of post-school availability, so Emily finally did the unthinkable and actually trusted her; letting her know that Alison was alive.
Emily revealed to Paige that she needed to send a huge wad of cash to “A.D. Incorporated” great name, bro and Paige, of course, took this opportunity to mail a letter saying that Alison was alive. Paily ended the night on a negative note, as Emily told Paige that she didn’t like ultimatums when it came to their relationship, but I truly hope that these two crazy kids make it work. Because seriously, no disrespect to Toby, but now that Caleb is gone Paige is by far the most stable significant other on this show.
In the next episode of Pretty Little Liars season 4 episode 22 entitled Cover for Me, Emily takes up the sleuthing reins as she searches for answers about Ezra and Mona. After confronting both, Emily tries to make sense of the heartbreaking situation. Hanna, on the other hand, begins a new search after being confronted by Det. Holbrook and Lt. Tanner with a possible new lead in Alison’s case.
