The trailer for this week’s Game of Thrones season 6 episode 5 "The Door" introduced a brand new character, believed to be named Kinvara. She is played by actor Ania Bukstein, and appears to be wearing red robes and the very same necklace as Melisandre.
This isn’t so surprising, given R’hllor is an established religion in Westeros and Essos, but what exactly is she doing in Meereen? The official HBO synopsis for the episode states that ‘Tyrion seeks a strange ally’, and in the trailer we see her in the chamber with Tyrion and Varys, telling them: "Knowledge has made you powerful, but there's still so much you don't know."
This doesn’t give us much to go on, but leaked sides from the auditions for the part do (which you can read below, and probably differ from the final script): she believes Daenarys is Azor Ahai.
This obviously differs greatly from fellow Red Priestess Melisandre, who mistakenly believed Stannis to be the chosen one, and is now hedging her bets on Jon Snow. Will the two ever meet and share their different theories?
Tyrion and Varys will surely be skeptical of religious prophecies, but given the current state of Meereen, they could certainly use her disseminating this theory to the people, whether it’s true or not.
The 'leaked Kinvara script sides'
Herald: “You stand in the presence of Kinvara, High Priestess of the Red Temple of Volantis, the Flametruth, the light of wisdom, the first servant of the Lord of the Light.”
Tyrion: “Welcome to Meereen. That’s about the extent of my Valyrian. Do you mind if we continue in Common?”
*Kinvara nods*
Tyrion: “Thank you for traveling all this way. I know from personal experience how uncomfortable the journey can be. The truth is, we need your help. Our hope is that we can persuade you to, to …”
Kinvara: “You want my priests to convince the Meereenese that the city’s conqueror is the people’s savior.”
Tyrion/Varys: “We prefer liberator to conqueror.”
