They are back and 24 is rebooted for Live Another day as its best 24 has always had the soul of a Western. Now it’s riding back into town and that's exactly what it delivers.
“24: Live Another Day” picks up the story of Jack Bauer four years after he slipped into exile. He’s in London, living in the shadows and hunted by, among others, his own government. But the bad guys are still out there, too, and as we know from the original eight-season run of “24,” Jack is genetically wired to stop them.
This 12-episode resurrection starts with two hours Monday night and could wrap up Jack’s story in its short season. Jack’s task has become more complicated not only because the feds want him, but because he has lost his inside-information person, the uber-loyal Chloe O’Brian.
She too has gone rogue, working for an Edward Snowden-type leaker of government secrets. She and Jack soon meet again, with an altered relationship that forges a first-rate dramatic center for the new tale. On the other side, agents Steve Navarro and Kate Morgan are trying to neutralize Jack, even while they try to protect President James Heller, who has a secret.
As in the best Westerns, the good guys here have dark qualities, and our heroes sometimes have to circumvent their own side. This “24” also wades into the whole government secrecy issue, which some viewers may see as reinforcing one longstanding perspective on Jack Bauer: that he proves true justice can only be obtained outside the corrupt world of government.
But the reason to watch 24: Live Another Day isn’t for ideology. It’s to get caught up in a fast-paced, high-powered adventure played out by people we care about. Don’t just miss it.
