The episode was mostly a confrontation between Elijah and Klaus. Elijah was willing to do whatever was necessary to save Rebekah. Elijah basically told Klaus to take a chill pill, but Klaus is Klaus. “You look like father,” Elijah said. That struck a chord with Klaus. “I’m not him,” Klaus bitterly replied.
Klaus is right, too. He is definitely not his father. Mikael has and always will be the worst. He beat poor baby Klaus just for being alive. Elijah tried to protect the child, but stepped aside when Mikael got in his face. Always being the righteous brother, Elijah really tried to calm Klaus down.“Be better than him,” Elijah said. “Do what he could not. Demonstrate the grace of mercy rather than this petty cruelty.”
Rebekah stepped in and blamed Klaus’s cruelty for her betrayal. Klaus warned them both that he would spare no one, not even Elijah, if that was what it took for vengeance. Klaus put Rebekah on trial for betraying her family. Rebekah said she never wanted Klaus dead, she only wanted him out of New Orleans. Klaus had prevented Rebekah from loving Marcel. Rebekah told Klaus he was cruel and manipulative to her when he shouldn’t have been. Klaus tried to say he was protecting her from unworthy men.
Unbeknownst to Klaus, Rebekah was the only one who truly stood up to Mikael for Klaus. This didn’t really mean anything to Klaus at the moment. He was still focused on Rebekah’s lust for Marcel. But Rebekah wasn’t going to beg for Klaus’s forgiveness. “Given the choice, I’d do it again,” Rebekah spat at Klaus. Almost instantly, Klaus lunged for Rebekah, but Elijah got in the mix and managed to get the mystical knife and the white oak stake.
Elijah admitted to Klaus that Rebekah was prepared to kill Mikael for him. Klaus didn’t budge from his pity party. Then, Klaus got all up in Elijah’s vulnerabilities. “You look at me and you see everything you abhor in yourself,” Klaus said. “Sure, you dress it up with your fancy suits and your handkerchiefs. You, with your mask of civility and eloquence. You’re every bit the abomination that I am. Or worse.”
Klaus slithered around Elijah and managed to stab him with the mystical knife! However, Elijah threw the white oak stake away before succumbing to the pain and Rebekah got hold of it. Meanwhile, Marcel went to Genevieve to break the boundary spell. He was prepared to make an offer: vampires would stay out of the cauldron, and there would be no more executions. Genevieve only wanted Davina, and Marcel accepted the offer. (Poor Davina just keeps getting tossed around.
It was now just Klaus versus Rebekah. Klaus wanted Rebekah to admit that she wanted him dead when she summoned Mikael. “Maybe I did,” she said. Klaus was completely stunned at this revelation. So stunned that he stabbed Rebekah with the white oak stake!
Thankfully, he just missed her heart. He just wanted her to feel a fraction of the fear that he felt when Mikael came for him. “You accuse me of being evil and yet you are the one who conspired to kill your own blood,” Klaus told Rebekah. The guy had a point. Klaus confessed that he loved his family, but it was Mikael who ruined him. Rebekah said Mikael ruined all of them. (She was right.) Mikael instilled anger and paranoia in Klaus, fear of abandonment in Rebekah, and unyielding selflessness in Elijah. “We are the strongest creatures in the world and yet we are damaged beyond repair. We live without hope and yet we will never die. We are the definition of cursed. Always and forever,” Rebekah said.
After settling down a bit, Klaus asked Rebekah what she wanted. Rebekah said she wanted a home and a family. She wanted someone to love her. In order for this to happen, Klaus exiled her from New Orleans. They are far too damaged to stay together, he said. Rebekah accepted his demands and walked away.
After Klaus pulled the mystical knife out from his insides, Elijah found Rebekah. He wished her good luck in the rest of her life. Rebekah told Elijah to help Klaus find his way. Rebekah may have accepted Klaus’s rules, but Marcel didn’t want to. He wanted to face Klaus. In very un-Klaus fashion, he simply walked away. However, Elijah walked in the room and everyone froze. Elijah told the room that he was taking back New Orleans, and everyone had better adhere to his demands or else they’d be dead. He granted Marcel mercy because of Rebekah, but he was exiled as well.
Rebekah and Marcel met up for a final goodbye. She was so glad she was free. They kissed and she left. Rebekah also stopped by to see Hayley. She wished her luck with the rest of her pregnancy and warned her of Klaus’s enemies. She told Hayley to tell her little one all about her aunt Becky.
And yes, Rebekah headed out of New Orleans with a smile on her face. She was finally free to be whoever she wanted to be. She is no longer bound by her family and fear. I was happy to see this happen for her. However, does this mean she is gone for good? Time heals all wounds, so maybe not. But really, can she make a pit stop in Mystic Falls? I’m sure a certain Matt Donovan would love to see this new and improved Rebekah.
In the next episode of the originals season 1 episode 17 entitled Moon Over Bourbon Street, After accusing Klaus of doing nothing while their control over the Quarter crumbles, Elijah makes a move to take matters into his own hands. He receives an intriguing offer of support from Francesca, a beautiful woman from a powerful New Orleans family. In an attempt to bring the warring factions of the city together, the Mikaelsons throw an extravagant party, where Klaus offers Jackson a tempting deal, Elijah and Hayley share a dance, and a violent fight comes to a surprising end. Finally, even as Marcel works on a new path to power, he continues to help Camille deal with her Uncle Kieran's tragedy.
