The episode opens up with Spencer coming home from a very, very short rehab stint three days to be exact. To make up from her short time there, she brings home a new guy. Her new drug and alcohol abuse counselor, Dean, will be staying at the Hasting’s house in order to monitor Spencer.
While it’s definitely a serious circumstance and Spencer has a lot of issues to work out, it’s hard to complain about the new eye candy she gets to see every day.
Dean forces Spencer to do a lot of therapeutic running, which actually helps her recall some of the memories she lost the last time she was addicted to pills. She can remember chasing Ali with a shovel and hitting her on the head. Though these may be unreliable memories and could just be a compilation of other events that happened. When Spencer confronts her mom about it, Mrs. Hastings refuses to confirm anything that Spencer is remembering. Aria, this episode, is off visiting Syracuse as a prospective student where she meets her new Ezra-distraction, Riley. It was a nice break that Aria needed and deserved after all the pain she has gone through. The pair spends a whirlwind week together going to parties and shacking up together. Despite it all happening so fast and lots of under-aged drinking, Riley was actually pretty cute and seemed like a nice fit for Aria.
When Aria returns to Rosewood, the first thing she does is go to Ezra’s apartment. After pleading for him to finally leave town, Ezra steps in and claims that he cancelled the book deal and wants her to read his book.
This time, instead of dropping it over the side of a ski lift, Aria takes the manuscript. It turns out that while undercover, Ezra had some theories of his own about A. More specifically, he believed that Mrs. DiLaurentis is the one who has been behind it this whole time. Which, doesn’t exactly sound like the craziest theory in the world? Allison had to learn her wicked ways from someone after all. Mrs. DiLaurentis does take her creepy level up a notch this episode with the quip about Spencer’s “clean sheets” right after Spencer finds dirt in her bed with a note from A saying, “I know you dug her grave. Now I’m digging yours. Kisses.”
While the other girls are dealing with their own problems, Emily is trying to dig deeper into why Mona has been working with Ezra. It turns out that in exchange to keep her illegal activities out of Ezra’s book, Mona starting dating Mike in order to feed him information about Aria. Of course, while undercover Mona actually fell for Mike. Does that sound familiar? We don’t see how Ezra is ever going to be redeemed from this grave he keeps digging for himself. Hannah, who is still slightly recovering from her awkward kiss attempt with Holbrook, goes on a date with Travis. Her nervousness gets the best of her and Hannah practices her anxious eating habits. She has to leave the date early, though, because Aria sends an “S.O.S.” to tell the girls about Mrs. DiLaurentis. Hopefully Caleb comes back to Rosewood since Ravenswood was just cancelled and Hannah will be able to have a normal relationship again. Later, Holbrook confronts Hannah about the letter Paige puts in his car. Honestly not knowing where it came from, she goes to talk to Emily about the whole situation. When she gets to Emily’s she sees a note from Paige and using her sleuthing skills she puts two and two together and figures out that Paige was the one who left the note for Holbrook. Hannah is clearly mad that Emily told her girlfriend about Ali being alive and Emily is just completely heartbroken that Paige would betray her like that.
With most of the girls’ relationships in shambles and a new possible A, things aren’t looking great for the liars. While not much happened this episode, it seems like the writers are really gearing up for the finale.
In the next episode of pretty little liars season 4 episode 23 entitled “Unbridled” the memories from her “lost summer,” Aria is still nursing a broken heart, Emily is reeling from Paige’s betrayal and Hanna unsuccessfully attempts to wade back into the dating pool. But as each girl tries to deal with her individual issues, they must focus their attention on their suspicions surrounding Mrs. DiLaurentis. Assuming that Mrs. D knows more about Ali and the night she went missing, the girls decide to help out at her charity bridal fashion show to gain access to the DiLaurentis house to search for answers.
Meanwhile, Ella and Jason return to Rosewood, each with something to hide.
