Is it cold in here? Or was it Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 1? The wildly premiere of this ABC drama aired last night, bringing with it very special appearance by Queen Elsa and her sister Anna, both of Frozen fame. Via flashback we see Elsa and Anna’s parents (King Agdar and Queen Idun, looking just like they did on the big screen on their fateful voyage to, we presume, the Northern Isles.
Prior to the ship making like the Titanic, Idun writes a message-in-a-bottle to the couple’s daughters, insisting to her husband, telling her husband that the kids must know.
Fast forward five years and Elsa and Anna are visiting their parents’ tombstones when Elsa lightens the mood with a surprise for the bride-to-be: their mom's wedding gown. However, as Anna tries it on, Elsa finds their mother’s diary, which implies it was Elsa’s fault that they took that ill-fated voyage.
They hoping stop her frightening powers. Anna then finds out her parents were headed to a place called Mist Haven (i.e. “The Enchanted Forest”) to gather intel and heads out there alone to learn more.
In the Storybrooke Regina storms out of the diner due to Emma bringing Marian bad from the dead, telling her frequent rival: "The more you try to help, the worse my life becomes.”
Is Regina about to go all evil again? Henry is concerned. The next day, Emma, Snow, Charming and Henry are taking little Neal for a walk when Grumpy runs down the street to declare the town “under attack!” He explains that he and Sleepy got frozen in their tracks the night before by someone with gulpice magic. So Emma and Hook follow a frosty trail and just as they get close to Elsa, the scared ice queen summons an enormous snow monster. Elsa remains in hiding while this monster heads to the forest.
IN A VACATED MANSION… Belle and Rumple are enjoying their honeymoon, only for the latter to grab Dark One’s dagger from Belle’s purse and work some magic on a curious tchotchke in the mansion. As he does so, it transforms into… the sorcerer’s hat.
Regina, peeved over Robin feeling the need to keep his marital vows, summons Sidney and says she needs an “elegant touch” to do away with Marian. She wants him to show her Marian was in the past so Regina can go back and kill her before Emma can save her.
Back in the frost, the snowman cannot be stopped. Until Regina gets the job done, however. Later, Hook confronts Emma about her avoiding him following their steamy smooth the night before, forcing Emma to explain the guilt she feels about Regina/Robin. Is more than that at play? Be patient, she assured him, adding a kiss for good measure.
As the premiere closes - and after Regina decides to find the author of the “cursed” storybook - we witness Elsa locating Gold’s shop to retrieve the snowflake necklace that she had gifted to her sister.
"Don’t worry, Anna,” Elsa thinks aloud. “I will find you.”
